ADM has an opening for a Group Manager, Operations Team at our Corporate Research Center located in Decatur, IL. The position reports directly to the Group Director leading the Process Chemistry & Catalysis (PC&C) Team.

Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced Operations Manager to lead/mentor research scientists that enable early-stage discovery to commercial stage development by supplying resources to the process chemistry, enzyme process chemistry and catalysis workstream teams. Technical leadership and expertise desired in the areas of analytical chemistry, catalytic reaction processes, enzymatic reaction chemistry, and laboratory safety. This individual must also have management experience with oversight over scientists possessing deep technical knowledge.

The Operations Team Manager will be an integral member of the Process Chemistry & Catalysis Team and will serve as a member of the PC&C Leadership Team. The incumbent will collaborate with groups across ADM Research to advance technology and products that utilize standard chemical processes, enzymes, catalysts, and advanced separation techniques in the areas of nutrition, renewable fuels and sustainable materials.

Job Responsibilities

  • Perform all job functions in accord with company safety guidelines, and act as functional leader in the field for PC&C.
  • Champion innovation at ADM both internally and with external partners
  • Serve as a motivated leader of the Operations Team and act as technical mentor for colleagues in the Process Chemistry and Catalysis Group
  • Collaborate with Group Managers in the Enzyme Process Chemistry, Process Chemistry, and Catalysis teams to develop a long-term strategic capability plan for the Operations Team.
  • Lead the capital long-range (5 year) planning efforts, and facilitate proper operation of the team by leading the procurement of parts/supplies, etc. Also serve as leader and point of contact for team in any infrastructure project(s) impacting our team.
  • Lead and act as subject matter expert for PC&C in laboratory automation software and electronic lab notebook.
  • Interface with ADM Science and Technology Leaders to influence the strategic direction of ADM business and research focus for PC&C portfolio
  • Interface with Technical Managers and Commercial Teams to advance ADM technology towards commercial goals
  • Oversee general lab to pilot scale projects to help generate and support commercial opportunities
  • Oversee development of technical reports and technology transfer packages of scalable technology packages
  • Lead projects for diverse technical teams utilizing gated project management tools
  • Report on status of research activities through verbal updates, written reports, and presentations
  • Ensure lab technicians, contract employees, and other coworkers follow ADM laboratory standards
  • Participate in safety reviews with colleagues on a variety of projects
    Skills and Proficiencies
    • BA/BS in chemistry, biochemistry, or chemical engineering (or other physical sciences degree) with at least 10 years of industry experience. [Advanced degree supplement: Ph.D. + 5 years, MS +8 years]
    • The preferred candidate will have previous management and/or mentoring experience.
    • Experienced group leader that has guided team members on projects that led to commercial success
    • Strong leadership skills to encourage open collaboration, promote constructive feedback, and motivate diverse group of team members
    • Knowledge of safe hazardous material handling and hazardous communication requirements and procedures
    • Solid understanding of statistical software, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, and Microsoft Office
    • Ability to function independently while interacting with ADM management, facility management, and ADM contract employees
    • Effective communication skills to effectively engage colleagues in research, operation, and business groups as well as external organizations
    • Experience with project management tools
