Job Description:
Transport team member that will accompany pediatric patients to
another destination quickly and safely. The pediatric transport
nurse will administer medical care while working within the
confines of the pediatric ground ambulance and regional facilities.
Essential to this care is the ability to assess conditions and the
needs of the pediatric patient quickly and accurately. Effective
communication skills are required as multiple patient hand offs can
occur in the course of a transport. In addition to caring for the
pediatric patient in the pre-hospital environment, the pediatric
transport nurse will be an integral part of care delivery to the
pediatric patients at Carle Hospital during non-transport times.
The transport nurse will assist in the delivery of care in the
PICU, pediatric unit, ED or any other area that requires the
expertise of a pediatric care nurse. The pediatric transport nurse
will also be responsible for public relations activities in the
region, education of regional providers, quality review of
transports, case study reviews and other PR and quality activities.
Work Schedule: 24 hour shifts, 1 on - 1-off - 1 on - 5 off
- Stabilization and care during transport of ill or injured
pediatric patients
- Perform and document complex assessments, interventions and
evaluations on any transport patient.
- Completes reports that are accurate and legible while ensuring
that medical, billing and administrative information is accurate
and complete.
- Prioritizes problems
- Participates in planned outreach marketing and education
activities
- Attends pre-mission briefings and mission debriefings and
completes necessary documentation
- Assists in pre-mission transport checklist and assists
ambulance personnel as requested
- Communicates with appropriate medical personnel regarding
patient condition, history, treatments, response to treatments and
other relevant information
- Assists with "tasks" within the hospital as necessary while on
12 hour shift status
- Contributes to the education of self and others by completing
the education requirements, as assigned.
- Provides respiratory support of transport patients, including
the determination of oxygen requirements, the use of aerosol
medications, use of non-invasive ventilator support, and ventilator
management.
- Independently initiates PALS emergency guidelines as determined
by patient condition.
- Attend to the psychosocial aspects of the patient and
family.
- Monitor, record, and report symptoms or changes in patient's
conditions.
- Maintain accurate, detailed reports and records.
- Record patient's medical information and vital signs
- Interpret and evaluate diagnostic tests to identify and assess
patient's condition
- Modify patient treatment plans as indicated by patient's
responses and conditions
- Monitor all aspects of patient care, including diet and
physical activity
- Instruct individuals and/or families on health education
- Other duties as assigned in the hospital and prehospital role
of pediatric transport nurse
- Stabilization and care during transport of ill or injured
pediatric patients
- Maintains advanced skill requirements by performing and
documenting the minimum requirements listed in the annual
competency assessment. Participates in planned outreach marketing
and education activities
- Communicates with appropriate medical personnel regarding
patient condition, history, treatments, response to treatments and
other relevant information
- Assist in the care of pediatric patients within Carle Hospital
when not on transports
- ED, PICU, pediatric floor, radiology suite and other areas in
need of assistance
- Responds to Pediatric Code Speeds and Pediatric Code 99s
- Reviews quality assurance data for pediatric transport and
other pediatric data as assigned
- Member of the maternal hemorrhage STAT team
- Demonstrates excellent customer service in the regional
hospitals
