The unit has a total of 70 beds. The patient-to-nurse ratio on days is 1:4-5 and on nights is 1:5-6. Common patient diagnoses include myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure, atrial fibrillation, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and patients requiring pacemaker or AICD placement. Experience in handling patients post-surgery, particularly lung surgeries, is essential. The role requires knowledge in EKG interpretation and the ability to titrate medications, primarily Cardizem and heparin. A Charge Nurse is present on every shift and does not typically take an assignment. House supervisors are available 24/7. Patient care techs are available, with ratios varying from 1:8-9 during days to 1:10-12 during nights. RNs are not required to troubleshoot respiratory therapy equipment except for specific circumstances. RNs must be able to read and interpret EKG strips. The unit utilizes Phillips telemetry monitors. Shift schedules include 12-hour shifts from 0700 to 1930 and 1900 to 0730. Weekend requirements entail working every other weekend. Holiday rotation is mandatory, covering key holiday dates throughout the year. Floating to other general medical units may be required. Scrub color is flexible, with restrictions on children or cartoon prints. Unit-specific orientation is typically one shift or part of a shift, depending on previous experience.
